What is a "Crop"?

The Descriptors menu option makes it possible to search for accessions by selecting traits and searching for specific values or ranges of values for which observations have been made. In GRIN-Global, the Descriptors option assumes you know which crop your accessions have been categorized.

To review observations for a species, you need to know in which crop(s) the species is included. In GG, it is up to the organization and its curators to decide which species are included within a crop. For example, accessions whose species is Vitis vinifera, in the NPGS GRIN-Global system, are found in two crops, Grapes, and Grape-Davis. NPGS does this because their grape collection is maintained at two distinct sites, one on the west coast and one in the east.

How Can You Determine the Crop for a Species?

On the Descriptor page, you can input genus and/or species and the relevant Crop will be selected.

You can also use Reports on the main menu, select the "Find the Crop/Descriptor list for a genus or species"report.

When prompted for the taxon, you can spell out the complete binomial name, or even part of the genus name. In the following example, the user used the % wild card, but did not need to - "Vit" would have been sufficient for the search to look up Vitis.
